Union contract ratified

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - By a 2-to-1 margin, members of Teamsters Union Local 992 voted Sunday to ratify a new three-year contract with U.S. Silica Co. that will increase the average hourly worker's salary about $5,000 over the life of the pact.

Bill Armes of Hedgesville, business agent for the local union, said most of the 72 hourly workers at the Berkeley Springs plant participated in the vote Sunday, but declined to give specific numbers on the voting.

He said the contract averages out to pay hikes of slightly more than 4 percent in each of the three years.

Armes said the contract with the sand mining company expired Wednesday morning, but company and union officials decided to extend negotiations. He said one additional negotiating session was held on Friday.

Negotiations on the new contract began in October, according to Armes.

In addition to the wage increases, the contract includes additional retirement benefits while maintaining health care benefits at current levels, Armes said.

The new contract runs through Dec. 2, 2000, he said.
