Police warn of scheme

Hagerstown City Police say a scheme designed to obtain birth certificate information and Social Security numbers is being conducted in Washington County.

Under the scheme, information in circulated by word of mouth, and supposedly in the media, that the Gerber baby food company has lost a class action lawsuit over claims its baby food is all natural.

People are told that as part of the settlement, Gerber must send a $500 savings bond to every baby in the U.S. born between 1985 and 1997.

Anyone with such a child is told to send a copy of the birth certificate and Social Security number to an address in Minnesota.

Sgt. Rick Johnson says people should not respond since the Gerber Products Co. in Fremont, Mich., said Gerber is not involved in any settlement involving reimbursements to customers.

In a letter to Johnson, the company said there was a settlement involving baby formula and pricing issues but it had nothing to do with Gerber.

The company said it further checked the claims and learned that the post office box in Minneapolis is closed and never had any connection to the Gerber company.
