Garage fire damage put at $30,000

November 29, 1997

A fire in a detached garage on Bower Avenue kept firefighters busy for several hours Friday morning.

Halfway and Williamsport firefighters were called to the Andrews' residence at 10610 Bower Ave. at 8:20 a.m. for reports of trash on fire inside the garage.

Before they arrived, a taxi driver radioed to authorities that the garage also was on fire.

Deputy Halfway Fire Chief Doug DeHaven said the owner of the home put some hot embers from his pipe into a trash container, which then caught on fire.

Damage was estimated at $30,000 to the loft area of the garage and contents, DeHaven said. A car and a tractor on the ground level were damaged but not destroyed.
