W.Va. hunter shoots self in foot

November 28, 1997

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Gerrardstown hunter accidentally shot himself in the foot Thursday morning, officials said.

Rodney Loy, 37, was hunting in the Shanghai area when a 12-gauge shotgun he was handling discharged and hit him in the big toe on the left foot, said Sgt. Jerry Jenkins of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources.

Jenkins said Loy's gun had a defective safety switch.

Loy's son used his father's truck to take Loy to the hospital, but the vehicle broke down on Interstate 81 near the Winchester Avenue exit, said Jenkins.

A passerby stopped and took Loy to City Hospital near Martinsburg, Jenkins said.

Loy was listed in satisfactory conditon Sunday at the hospital, according to a spokeswoman.
