Odello M. Leiter

Odello McCardell Leiter, 84, a resident of Ravenwood and formerly of Hagerstown and Clearwater, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born April 19, 1913, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Franklin Scott and Edna McCardell Leiter.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Priscilla Friedly Leiter.

He graduated cum laude from Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania.

He was president of the family business, Leiter Brothers Department Store, in Hagerstown. Earlier he had been employed by Best and Co. in New York City.


He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the original crew of the aircraft carrier USS Midway. He retired with the rank of lieutenant.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.

He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club; American Legion, Morris Frock Post 42; University of Pennsylvania Varsity Club; and Benevolent Protective Order of Elks 378. He participated in local amateur baseball.

He was president in 1941 of Hagerstown Rotary Club, where he had 53 years of perfect attendance; president of Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he received statewide honors, and director, representing Maryland at the national level; president of Senior Chamber of Commerce in 1952; president of Washington County Hospital Board from 1974 to 1975; a member of the board of directors of the Second National Bank; and later a member of the advisory board of the Maryland National Bank; and president of Community Chest, predecessor to the United Way. He served on Executive Board of the Washington County Council Boy Scouts of America; American Red Cross as industrial chairman; vice president of Washington County Public Health Association; and in 1941 he was appointed chief deputy air raid warden and later personnel director of Washington County Office of Civilian Defense.

He is survived by two sisters, Catherine Leiter Bowman and Anna Leiter Hershey, both of Hagerstown; two brothers, Franklin Scott Leiter of Hagerstown and Richard Maxwell Leiter of Cross Junction, Va.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sarah Leiter Remsberg and Edna Mae Gysberts.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. Honorary and active pallbearers will be members of the Hagerstown Rotary Club.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Shirley V. Kern

PLEASANTVILLE, Md. - Shirley Virginia Kern, 71, of Pleasantville, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.

Born Sept. 5, 1926, in Millville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Mable V. Dillow Fry.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by her husband, of 54 years, George W. Kern; three sons, Ronald L. Kern and James R. Kern, both of Ranson, W.Va., and Robert W. Kern of Pleasantville; two sisters, Patsy A. Zombro of Halltown, W.Va., and Linda Housden of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three brothers, Maurice Moore Jr. and Thomas Moore, both of Charles Town, W.Va., and Donald Moore of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Harder.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry. The Rev. George M. Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in Samples Manor Cemetery, Samples Manor, Md.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Hiliary P. Lynch

Hiliary Pierce Lynch, 91, formerly of 127 Englewood Road, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Born Oct. 17, 1906, in Benevola, Md., he was the son of the late William H. and Nannie Main Lynch.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Irene Lynch, in 1988.

He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft, for 30 years, retiring in 1972.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

He is survived by one son, Richard P. Lynch of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Edna Diebert and Ethel Shifler; and three brothers, Donald Lynch, Hubert Lynch and Willie Lynch.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. Lans E. Alexis will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
