Chimney fire in Berkeley Springs

BERKELEY SPRINGS - A chimney fire spread into the wall of a house at 409 Wilkes St. Friday night, fire officials said.

Firefighters had to open the wall to extinguish the fire, which caused about $5,000 in damages, said Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Steve McBee.

A woodstove was hooked to the chimney in the house, which was owned by Brenda Kershaw, McBee said.

INWOOD - One man was thrown from a car after it went into the median on Interstate 81 Friday and rolled over several times, according to West Virginia State Police.

Glenn S. Seidel, 35, of Winchester, Va., was driving a station wagon in the southbound lane just south of the Inwood exit when the car went off the east side of the road and into the median, police said.

The car overturned many times in the 1:50 a.m. wreck, throwing passenger Edward Riggleman from the car, police said.

Riggleman, 30, of Winchester was listed in serious condition Friday night at Winchester Medical Center, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Seidel was treated and released, the spokeswoman said.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
