Medic unit hit by tractor-trailer

SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A Chambersburg Area Medic Unit was hit by a tractor-trailer Friday morning after the truck's driver failed to merge to the right, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The medic unit was leaving an accident scene, in which no one was injured, on Pa. 81 about a quarter mile north of Exit 9 shortly after 9:30 a.m. and was entering the northbound left lane, police said.

The medic unit had a clear lane because all traffic had merged in the right northbound lane since all emergency vehicles were parked along the left lane, police said.

A 1991 Freightliner going between 60 and 70 mph failed to merge and hit the left rear of the medic unit, pushing it into the median, police said.

The tractor-trailer then hit the left rear of a 1989 Dodge Caravan, causing it to turn 180 degrees and become lodged against the left front of the tractor trailer, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Robert E. Kuzara, 39, of Wellsville, N.Y., had not been charged as of Friday night, police said.

Kuzara was wearing his seat belt, police said.

It was unknown whether Kuzara or the driver of the Dodge Caravan, Patrick Eckenrode, of Bridge Water, Va., was injured. The other five people involved in the accident were not injured, police said.

The ambulance had initially responded to an accident around 9:30 a.m. in which a mini van pulling a camper rolled over after the driver swerved to avoid a vehicle in his lane, police said.
