Pa. man held in abduction case

A Chambersburg, Pa., man was arrested Friday after he allegedly tried to abduct a woman in the West End, according to Hagerstown City Police.

Gary Eugene Barges, 34, of 656 Pleasant St., was charged with second-degree assault, said Sgt. John Ryder.

Barges asked a woman in the 200 block of West Side Avenue for directions to Valley Mall on Friday morning, Ryder said. When she attempted to shake hands with the man, Barges allegedly tried to pull her into the red Geo Prism he was driving, Ryder said.

The suspect was later picked up by police at West Side Avenue and West Franklin Street after a police dispatcher recognized the car from the description, Ryder said.


Barges was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on Friday night in lieu of $2,000 bond, police said.

House burns in alleged suicide try

MONROVIA, Md. - A Monrovia man who changed his mind about committing suicide, allegedly burned down his house Friday morning, according to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

Roy Sier Jr. allegedly doused himself with gasoline and ignited his home at 11901 Weller Road at 8:49 a.m. when he had second thoughts about killing himself, according to the fire marshal's office.

Sier, 29, was the only one home at the time, a fire official said. No one was injured, officials said.

Sier allegedly tried to drive an ambulance away, officials said.

The single-story home was completely destroyed with damage estimated at $50,000, officials said. About 30 firefighters had the fire under control in 45 minutes.

Sier was charged with first-degree arson, second-degree assault, theft, reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated, obstructing a firefighter and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and the manufacture/possession/distribution of a destructive device, officials said.

He was being held in the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on Friday night in lieu of $300,000 bond, police said.

The Frederick County Sheriff's Office and firefighters from Green Valley, New Market, Urbana, Mount Airy, Hyattstown, Citizens Truck, and Libertytown also responded.

Woman reports rape

EMMITSBURG, Md. - An Emmitsburg, Md., woman reported being raped Thursday night by a man she picked up a ride home from, according to Maryland State Police.

The woman got the ride near a Pennsylvania tavern Thursday night, said Maryland State Police, who were notified of the rape by Pennsylvania State Police.

The suspect forcibly raped the woman in an open field near Harney Road in Emmitsburg, police said. The man threatened the victim verbally during and after the rape, police said.

Afterward, the suspect and victim returned to Pennsylvania, where the victim jumped from the vehicle in the area of Biglerville, Pa., police said.

Pennsylvania State Police were notified after she went to a local residence, police said.

The woman was taken to Gettysburg Hospital, police said.

The suspect was described as a white male, 35 to 40 years old with dirty blonde, shoulder-length hair, a full beard and mustache, police said. The man had a medium build with a beer belly, police said.

The man was driving a small four-door, faded blue vehicle with bucket seats, police said.
