While a Sharpsburg man admitted Thursday to forcing a preschool age girl to touch his genital area five years ago, the child's father told the judge the offense was much worse.

After hearing the father's emotional statement, Washington County Circuit Judge John H. McDowell ordered Adam Lowell Ingram, 35, jailed until sentencing for a third-degree sex offense.

"I believe there will be incarceration of some nature, he might as well get started now," McDowell said.

The maximum penalty for a third-degree sex offense is 10 years in prison.

Maryland State Police charged Ingram with child abuse and two sexual offenses, including oral sex with the girl.

Thursday, the child's father handed McDowell a picture of his daughter as she looked when she was 4.

"He forced her to perform oral sex on him, your honor," the father said. "It was the most heinous thing that could happen to a child who hadn't even entered school yet."

Ingram, of 2238 Dargan School Road, had been free on personal recognizance until his court appearance Thursday.

The incidents are alleged to have occurred between February and July 1992, court records said.

The incidents came to light this summer when the child, who is now 9, was overheard by the mother of another child as she talked about the encounters, court records said.

That woman contacted the child's mother and then called police.

Assistant Washington County State's Attorney Arthur Rozes said Ingram told police it could have happened - he was drinking at the time.

"This has been devastating for the family," the mother of the victim said Thursday. "Nothing has happened to him and my daughter has had to live with this."

Defense attorney John Salvatore said Ingram is in treatment in Frederick, Md.
