No sweet home, Alabama, for Suns

Hagerstown Suns owner Winston Blenckstone denied a broadcast report that his team could soon be moving to Montgomery, Ala.

"There's no way that we're going to Montgomery, Ala.," Blenckstone said Thursday evening.

A television news report said officials in Montgomery had put together a deal to build a new minor league stadium and were considering the Suns as a tenant.

Blenckstone said he knew Montgomery has been trying to get into the Class A South Atlantic League for the past year. He said he was contacted by the Montgomery group a month ago and was asked for some information about the team and market.

"They approached us, but they never put a bid in" to relocate, he said.

The Suns have one year left on a lease with the city for Municipal Stadium, which Blenckstone said he will honor. He said he hopes a deal can be reached locally to build a new stadium in the Hagerstown area.

He said teams in the Suns' situation, with low attendance and short-term leases, are common targets for cities hoping to lure a team.

"We're the ones that are going to be picked on," he said.
