FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - A Fayetteville, Pa., woman was shot to death Wednesday evening at her home in Greene Township, Pa., and a man was charged in her death, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The dead woman was identified by police as Tonya M. Caldwell, 29, of 1472 Mount Shadow Terrace.

Victor Harold Vaughn Jr., 43, of the same address, was charged with criminal homicide in Caldwell's death, police said. He was arraigned before District Justice Gary Carter and ordered held in Franklin County Prison without bail.

Caldwell was shot once with a handgun at 6:30 p.m. while in her home, police said.

Franklin County Chief Deputy Coroner Jeffrey Conner pronounced Caldwell dead at the scene, police said.

The slaying was the seventh in Franklin County this year.

Neighbor Carol Fleagle, who lives across the street from the victim, said a man knocked on the door of the Fleagle home, and when Fleagle's son answered, he told him what had happened, she said.

Fleagle said her son shut the door and ran to get her. Fleagle said she ran across the street and into the home to check on Caldwell.

"All I saw was this woman lying on the kitchen floor," with an apparent head injury, Carol Fleagle said.

Neighbors said they believed the victim's 8- and 12-year-old sons were in the home at the time of the shooting but didn't know if they witnessed it.

"We moved out of town to get away from violence. You see this kind of thing in the movies," Carol Fleagle said.

Sonja Boatman said she sold Caldwell her two-story home in the two-year-old housing development about a year ago.

Boatman and Fleagle said Caldwell worked the night shift at a local nursing home.

"It's an isolated incident. It doesn't make me afraid to live here," said Tim Mummert, who moved into a home on the corner of the street a few months ago.
