A Hagerstown man has been charged with a robbery attempt and assault on an older man and a woman who came to a victim's aid.

Sean Jeffrey Thompson, 27, was being held at the Washington County Detention Center on $40,000 bond Wednesday. There also was a parole intake detainer on him for an unknown prior offense, jail officials said.

The new charges, filed Nov. 14, include first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, attempt to rob, reckless endangerment, attempted theft, and destruction of property.

On July 17, Hagerstown City Police were called to the front of Duke's Tavern, 33 E. Franklin St., at 1:42 p.m. for a report of a robbery.

When they arrived, they found Russell Sites Jr., 75, of Hagerstown, bleeding heavily from the mouth, and Teresa Shatzer, 33, also of Hagerstown, with a cut on her forehead.

The two victims told police their assailant had run toward East Washington Street after he knocked Sites down in a robbery attempt, and hit both of them.

Shatzer said they left the tavern and were approached by a man who struck Sites and demanded his money. Shatzer told police she pulled the robber off Sites and was then struck herself, court records said.

Both Sites and Shatzer were treated at Washington County Hospital while police began a search for the suspect.

Based on a description and information obtained by a police detective, Thompson was picked up on July 27 and photographed for a photo lineup to be viewed by the victims, court records said.

While Sites didn't make an identification of Thompson, Shatzer did, court records said.
