Jewish food festival set for Sunday

The Jewish Food Festival sponsored by the sisterhood of Congregation B'Nai Abraham is Sunday, Nov. 23, from noon to 3 p.m. in the synagogue social hall at 53 E. Baltimore St. in Hagerstown.

Last year about 350 people attended, says Jeanne Jacobs, who is chairing the event along with Delcina Lechten.

At least that many are expected this year, and they'll be seeking traditional favorites such as matzo ball soup, beef brisket, potato knishes, blintzes, noodle puddings and chopped liver. Other specialties are chicken couscous and kasha, a mixture of pasta and buckwheat.

Desserts will include cheesecake, Danish pastry, tarts, cookies and cakes. Other items available for purchase include bagels, challah and rye and pumpernickel breads.

Attendees can dine at the festival or purchase items for carryout. No tickets are needed.

It's a good idea to arrive early, as the foods sell quickly, Jacobs says.

About 120 families in the congregation are helping with the festival. For weeks, members have been baking and freezing foods.

Proceeds from the annual festival go to sisterhood projects.

Tours of the synagogue also will be given.
