Coast Guard expansion approved

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Preliminary plans for expanding the U.S. Coast Guard Operations Systems Center were approved Monday night by the Berkeley County Planning Commission.

The preliminary sketch plat for the three-story, 73,957-square-foot addition was approved during a brief public hearing at Monday's meeting.

Ken Lowe, the managing partner for Panhandle Venture II, said site work on the $9 million project will begin as soon as possible at the Liberty Business Park off W.Va. 9 near Martinsburg. His company will own the building and lease it to the Coast Guard.

The building is scheduled for completion in the fall of 1998.

In August, Capt. Bill Ashforth said the project will increase employment at the center from 183 to about 320 once consolidation of the service's computer centers is completed.
