School officials want purchasing controls

Washington County school officials discussed Wednesday how to set up a system of checks and balances for the Washington County Board of Education's purchasing policies.

School officials discussed having an independent auditor review the school district's purchasing system, but acting Superintendent Herman G. Bartlett Jr. suggested school officials hold off on the idea until he has had a chance to review the situation.

Bartlett suggested that a team of people be set up within the central office to periodically review compliance with purchasing policies.

If the school system doesn't set up an internal review process, the issue will never be resolved, said Bartlett.

"I know it's been a tough issue for you," said Bartlett.

Officals said some changes have been made, such as requiring different levels of signatures for purchases and new management.
