Gold's Gym takes over Rando's facility

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Gold's Gym opened Tuesday in the former Rando's Fitness Center at 1221 N. Queen St., to the relief of area fitness enthusiasts.

"It's like Christmas in November," Eddie Miller, of Martinsburg, said Wednesday.

Since the gym closed in September, he has been running and walking outdoors occasionally and went to other gyms in Martinsburg and Hagerstown, but didn't want to buy a membership anywhere else, he said.

"I was trying to wait it out," Miller said.

"I think this facility is probably 10 years ahead of its time," Miller said of the 45,000-square-foot workout complex that houses two rooms full of free weights and machines, an aerobics area that is surrounded by an indoor track, and a section filled with stair climbers, treadmills, rowing and ski machines, and stationary bikes. The building also features tanning beds, a game room, child care center and locker rooms.

"You don't know how good you have it until you don't have it," said member Tim Hall, of Martinsburg.

"I haven't been working out" since Rando's closed, Hall said. He checked out other gyms in the area, but said none interested him as much as the one in the former Nichols building.

Two months after it opened, Rando's closed its doors in Martinsburg on Sept. 19, as the result of a lawsuit filed by GBR North Queen Street Limited Partnership. GBR alleged in the lawsuit that Rando Enterprises defaulted on a lease agreement signed on Jan. 16, and a promissory note.

John Link, general manager and partner in Fitness America LLC, which operates Gold's Gyms in Martinsburg, Hagerstown and the Washington, D.C., area, said the new management is trying to accommodate the approximately 4,000 Rando's Fitness Center members in Martinsburg.

"As a courtesy to the local community, we're offering paid-in-full memberships to those who had paid memberships with Rando's," Link said. Members must present their contracts or canceled checks in order for their memberships to be honored, he said.

Gold's also took over the Rando's facility on Maugans Avenue in Hagerstown on Oct. 23.

Gold's Gym offers memberships for $19.99 a month for use of all of the facilities and programs other than the tanning beds and child care.

The child care center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. The charge is $1, Link said.

Tanning costs $5 for one session or $30 for 10 sessions, he said.

The gym is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, he said.

The gym will employ about 25 full-time and 25 part-time workers, Link said.
