Overcrowding issue to be addressed

FREDERICK, Md. - A citizens' advisory committee has been formed to recommend attendance area changes to reduce overcrowding at Thurmont Elementary School, which is operating at 127 percent of its rated capacity.

Committee members represent the four public elementary schools in northern Frederick County that will be affected - Emmitsburg, Lewistown, Sabillasville and Thurmont.

The committee will hold a public hearing in February and plans to present its recommendations to Superintendent Jack Dale by Feb. 20. The board of education is expected to act on the boundary line changes before the end of May.

Those who wish to express their opinions before the public hearing should contact committee members from their school attendance areas: Sharon Hamilton and Greg Tasker, Emmitsburg Elementary; Amy Benton-Lewis and William O'Neal, Lewistown Elementary; Allison Richards and Mike Mathis, Thurmont Elementary; and Wayne Dotson and Bob Scalese, Sabillasville Elementary.

25 acres sold to Frederick schools

FREDERICK, Md. - The Maryland Odd Fellows organization board has approved the sale of approximately 25 acres to the Frederick County Public Schools.

The property, at the intersection of North Market Street and Schifferstadt Drive, will be the site of a new 900-student middle school to replace Gov. Thomas Johnson Middle School. Subject to funding availability, the new school could open to students in September 2000. The current school can hold 572 students.

The acquisition price is $1.25 million.

When the new school opens, the middle and high school portions of the Gov. Thomas Johnson facility will be combined to create a larger high school. The expansion will provide space for about 500 more ninth- to 12th-grade students.

The remaining acreage owned by the Odd Fellows has been slated for residential development.
