Cable rates to rise

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Cable television subscribers in Martinsburg will be getting higher rates along with more channels, according to the general manager of C/R TV Cable.

Larry Willingham told the city council Thursday that the cost of basic cable is going from $9.60 a month to $11 starting Dec. 1. At the same time, the number of channels in the basic package will go from 18 to 30.

Tier-one service, which includes A&E, CNN and American Movie Classics, will go from $22.81 a month to $27, Willingham said. The total number of channels is increasing to 60 for those customers.

Those rates do not include state taxes and franchise fees to local governments, he said.

C/R TV will change its name to GS Communications-Martinsburg on Jan. 1, Willingham said. The company also owns the cable systems for all of Berkeley and Jefferson counties, as well as systems in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Willingham said about 70 percent of the customers in Martinsburg have been switched over to an upgraded fiber optic system. He said almost all customers will be switched over to the newer system by Dec. 1, "but there will be a few stragglers."
