Allegheny Power says be beware of imposters

Impostors posing as Allegheny Power employees have showed up at homes throughout the electric company's service area in recent weeks, company officials said Thursday.

"All Allegheny Power employees, including linemen, meter readers and right-of-way maintenance personnel, carry the same type of company photo identification card," said Jim Haney, director of operations services, in a statement.

Haney stated that employees are trained to show the ID card upon request.

"In most cases, our employees do not need to enter a customer's house to perform their work," Haney said in the statement. "To be safe, do not allow any individual to enter your home until his or her identity has been confirmed."

Haney said company employees do not charge fees for work performed on site at a customer's house.

Customers who are uncertain about the identity of someone claiming to work for Allegheny Power can call the company 24 hours a day at 1-800-255-3443.
