Man falls in drainage ditch

November 01, 1997

An unidentified man was taken to Washington County Hospital on Saturday around 7 p.m. after he fell into a 6- to 8-foot-deep drainage ditch, said Capt. Brian Pile with the Hagerstown Fire Department.

The man had possible head and back injuries, Pile said.

"It would appear that somehow he just walked into the drainage ditch," said Pile. The ditch is between the Fennel Building and the Venice Inn, where the man was a guest, he said.

There's no fence or rail preventing anyone from falling into the ditch, which Pile described as about 10 feet wide.

He said he would ask the Hagerstown Department of Public Works to install a rail around the ditch to prevent such accidents.

Community Rescue Service also responded.
