In the wake of the serious fire Oct. 29 on Greenmount Avenue, members of the Halfway Volunteer Fire Company will be conducting an After The Fire safety program today in parts of the Friendship Park area of Halfway.
Homes without working smoke detectors will have one installed free of charge by the fire department, according Deputy Fire Chief Doug DeHaven.
The following streets will be covered: Greenmount, Hollywood, Wolford, Tanglewood, Lexington and parts of York and Marbern, DeHaven said.
Anyone not in that area who wants a smoke detector checked or installed is asked to call 301-582-2223.
The family at 11207 Greenmount Ave. didn't have any smoke detectors, DeHaven said. The family narrowly escaped from a second-story window.
