October 23, 1997

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Young ghosts and goblins will be able to go trick or treating on Halloween night in Martinsburg, according to city police.

Trick or treating in the city is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. City police and Neighborhood Watch organizations will have extra patrols working the streets and neighborhoods.

City police are asking that parents take note of the following safety tips for their children:

* Wear light-colored costumes and add reflective tape to make them more visible to motorists.

* Make sure masks do not obscure a child's vision, or encourage them to use makeup.

* An adult should accompany children.

* Take a flashlight.

* Stay in well-lighted areas.

* Stay within your own neighborhood and only visit the homes of people you know.

* Give and accept only wrapped or packaged candy.

* Examine all treats before children are allowed to eat them.

* Do not accept candy or rides from strangers in vehicles.
