October 20, 1997

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - West Virginia State Police and a Martinsburg City Police K-9 unit followed the money Monday morning to find a suspected burglar.

The thief allegedly left a trail of $5 bills along his escape route after burglarizing the Eagle Mart on W.Va. 9.

Carroll Wayne Light Sr., 43, was charged with breaking and entering and was jailed in lieu of $30,000 bond, according to documents at Berkeley County Magistrate Court.

Trooper D.M. Olack responded to a 4:44 a.m. alarm at the business, finding a glass window on the door smashed. Olack also found the deadbolt on the back door unlocked and several $5 bills lying on the pavement.

The K-9 unit was called in and tracked a scent to the area of Dilkes Plumbing Supply. There, more bills were found on the ground over a path of about 100 yards. The dog eventually tracked the scent to the home of Light's mother.

Carroll Light answered the door and was taken into custody while police searched part of the house. Police found a military-style glove that appeared to have glass particles on it, and a pair of boots that had glass particles and wet grass clinging to them.

Also found was a paper bag secured by a rubber band that contained $975 in sequentially numbered $5 bills. While tracking Light's trail, police found a total of $130.
