He was employed for 32 years at Letterkenny Army Depot, where he was a truck driver in the ammunition area, retiring in 1974.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Charlestown United Methodist Church, Cove Gap, Pa. He enjoyed reading and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Vernona Layton Ryder, whom he married Oct. 7, 1939; two daughters, Jane Shaffer of Chambersburg, and Alma Blum of Butler, Pa.; one son, H. Henry Ryder of Greencastle, Pa.; four sisters, Dorothy Bryan and Betty Dorty, both of Mercersburg, Ruth Strait of Stockton, Md., and Janet Willmert of Chambersburg; two brothers, William Ryder and Charles Ryder, both of Mercersburg; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Freda McLucas; and two brothers, Clarence Ryder and John Ryder.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Samuel L. Sheffler and the Rev. Milton W. Benny Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg.
A viewing will be held at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Elizabeth A. Ward
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Elizabeth A. Ward, 88, of 201 Franklin Farm Lane, and formerly of Tysons Corner, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at Franklin County Nursing Home in Chambersburg.
Born April 22, 1909, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, she was the daughter of the late Harvey P. and Lena M. Space Tierney.
Her husband, Richard O. Ward Sr., died in 1981.
She was a secretary in the Washington, D.C., office of Southern Railroad.
She is survived by one daughter, Donna Jean Hughes of Round Hill, Va.; one son, Richard O. Ward Jr. of Fayetteville, Pa.; one brother, Patrick Tierney of Oregon; and four grandsons.
She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
A graveside committal by the family will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Jackson Cemetery, Mount Jackson, Va. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Margaret H.Z. Hoover
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Margaret Helen Zeger Hoover, 88, of 27 W. Baltimore St., died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Aug. 6, 1909, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Sarah Ellen Deitrich Zeger.
She was employed as a sewing machine operator at U-Wanna Wash Frock, Fort Loudon, Pa.
She was a member of First Church of God, Mercersburg.
She is survived by her husband, Chester F. Hoover, whom she married June 23, 1956; three daughters, Mary K. Shuman of Fort Loudon, and Lillie M. Cordell and Patsy L. Helfrick, both of Greencastle; one son, Nelson I. Reeder of Greencastle; one stepson, Chester J. Hoover of Meadville, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, six brothers, three sisters and one stepgrandson.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Floyd E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas, Pa.
There will be no public viewing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rescue Hose Co. No. 1, 48 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.
Mabel M. Booth
WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Mabel Mae Booth, 88, of RD 2, who died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, was born March 21, 1909. She was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Etta Booth.
Kathleen R.B. Eighenbrode
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Kathleen R. Bewick Eighenbrode, 74, a resident of Piney Mountain Nursing Home, and formerly of 15444 Orchard Road, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born June 7, 1923, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Sarah Jennings Bewick.
Her husband, Theodore C. Eighenbrode, preceded her in death. They were married Aug. 31, 1947.
She attended St. Dominic's Elementary School and Seton High School, both in Baltimore.
Prior to her marriage, she was employed by C&P Telephone in Baltimore as an operator. For a short time, she worked as a proofreader for TAB Books, Blue Ridge Summit.
She was a member of St. Rita's Roman Catholic Church, Blue Ridge Summit.
She also was a member of National AARP, and the Emmitsburg, Md., senior center.
