2 killed in Buckeystown accident

BUCKEYSTOWN, Md. - An accident just before 6 a.m. Wednesday claimed the lives of two people, Maryland State Police said.

Paul Leon Sterner, 43, of Unionville, Va., was pronounced dead at the scene. Merle S. Bucher Jr., 25, of New Oxford, Pa., was extricated from his car but died en route to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said.

According to police, Bucher's 1989 Chevrolet Geo Spectrum was headed north on U.S. 15 just north of Mountville Road when it crossed the center line and struck a 1988 Chevrolet van head-on.

Sterner, a passenger in the Spectrum, was thrown from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

The driver of the van, Garry Lee Albright Sr., 46, of Frederick, Md., and a passenger, Earl Levi Gastley, 49, of Frederick, were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Albright was treated and released, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Gastley was in serious condition Wednesday night.
