Offer made for superintendent's post

October 01, 1997

The Washington County Board of Education selected a new school superintendent Wednesday, but the name of the person was not released.

School board members were attempting to contact the candidate Wednesday to offer the person the job, said school board member Doris J. Nipps.

If the person accepts the job, the candidate's name will be forwarded to the state Department of Education for approval, Nipps said.

Board members made the decision in a closed meeting, Nipps said.

The new superintendent will replace Wayne F. Gersen, who left the school system in July to head a school system in New York.

There were 33 applications for the superintendent's job. The field was reduced to nine candidates and then to four.

The four finalists were from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Delaware.
