Renovation aimed at creating 'technical institute'

October 01, 1997

When you start a building renovation project, it's always nice to have a construction contractor or two on your side.

Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. of the Cumberland Valley has dozens of tradespeople to draw from.

Association members are donating the materials, equipment and labor to build a technical training center at its one-story headquarters at 319 W. Howard St. in Hagerstown.

"We'll have a technical institute here," said Executive Director Joan Warner.

Local workers will receive specialized training in construction and maintenance trades such as carpentry, plumbing, masonry, painting and excavation.

They will be the first students in the country receiving this type of training, developed by the University of Florida's National Center for Construction and Research, she said.

Renovation of the building will be finished before an open house scheduled for Oct. 29, she said.
