GAINESBORO, Va. - A Paw Paw, W.Va., man who died Saturday in a one-vehicle accident apparently fell asleep at the wheel on his way home from work, according to Virginia State Police.
John Ballard, 27, was pronounced dead on arrival at Winchester Medical Center, police said. He was traveling north at 7:15 a.m. on U.S. 522 near the Va. 681 intersection when his 1986 Toyota 4-door ran off the right side of the road.
Police said Ballard's car ran into the guardrail and then veered back across the northbound lanes into the median of the divided highway. The car then struck a concrete culvert.
According to the report, Ballard had just left work at the Rubbermaid plant near Winchester. There were no passengers in the car, police said.
