Fire destroys log cabin

September 29, 1997

GERRARDSTOWN W.Va. - A family was left homeless after the log home they rented was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon, according to South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Bruce Chrisman.

The fire at the Poorhouse Road home of Stuart Lentz was called in at 12:03 P.M. and the two-story house was almost fully involved by the time units arrived. Chrisman said Sunday night the cause of the fire was undetermined, but appeared to have originated in the kitchen area.

Damage to the home and its contents was estimated at $80,000, Chrisman said. The house was owned by Howard A. James, according to the fire company report.

Chrisman said the family was not in the house when the fire started, but it was Lentz who returned and discovered the blaze. He said no family members or firefighters were injured.

South Berkeley was assisted at the scene by units from the Baker Heights and Back Creek fire companies. There were about 30 firefighters on the scene with the last ones returning to the Southern Berkeley station at 4:22 p.m.

Chrisman said the Red Cross was called in to assist the family. He did not know how many people lived at the house.
