The Health and Human Services Council of the Eastern Panhandle will meet at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va. Chief Wayne Cleveland of the Martinsburg City Police will present the program.

Six Pennsylvania firefighters will be among the 94 career and volunteer firefighters from 36 states attending the 16th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Md.

Sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, this event honors firefighters who died in service to their communities during the previous year. The memorial service marks the beginning of National Fire Prevention Week designated by President Clinton to focus national attention on the serious problems caused by fire.

More than 2,000 people, including families of the fallen firefighters, fire and emergency service leaders, and government officials from across the country will attend the ceremony. A plaque engraved with the name of each fallen firefighter will be unveiled at the memorial.

In 1990, Congress designated the memorial as the official national memroial to volunteer and career firefighters who die in the line of duty.

Many local fire departments plan to conduct simultaneous services; they will lower flags to half-staff, sound sirens at noon and observe a moment of silence.

The West Virginia Division of Rehabilitation Services and the West Virginia Statewide Independent Living Council will conduct a town meeting from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 in the assembly area at James Rumsey Technical Institute on W.Va. 9 in Martinsburg, W.Va. Attendants will get information from people with disabilities about what independent living services need to be provided, how they are provided and who will provide them.

Information collected at the town meetings throughout the state will be used to write a three-year state plan for independent living services in West Virginia.

The Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 77th annual dinner meeting Thursday, Oct. 16 at the American Legion, 63 E. Main St., Waynesboro, Pa.

A membership and guest reception will begin at 6:15 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
