Mail call

September 24, 1997

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"This is a message to all concerned parents. I'm the parent of a 10-year-old child and he's in the fifth grade. I'm appalled at the things my child hasn't been taught in school, yet he is being graded for them. If there are any other parents out there who are fed up and tired of what the schools are not teaching our children, and if you feel your child is suffering as a result of improper teaching methods, I'd like to hear from you. I need to hear from parents so that we can discuss this because some things have got to change and they've got to change fast because our kids are losing out. Thank you. I'll be waiting for your calls to Mail Call."

"Tell me why in the world do we have to be forced to wear seat belts in our own vehicles that no one else is paying for and if we choose not to wear one it should be our right. It should not be forced on us. What in the world kind of place are we living in anymore?"

"What's next? Our schools have become a money making business. They've lost their first love - teaching. They are now in the financial profit making business. First we pay taxes for schools, then the schools get federal funding, next we have fund-raisers from kindergarten on up where they entice little kids and offer them a reward like a bike or a computer as a prize to whoever sells the most. Now watch this move. Sunday's paper, Sept. 28, of The Herald-Mail has an ad of J.C. Penney's which states, 'Make a $5 donation to support our schools and you will receive a ticket entitling you to 25 percent off all regularly priced purchases. All donations go to your local schools.' Stop, look and listen. Our local county officials have turned their heads so they cannot see. Get rid of the high administrative costs at the Board of Education and buy paper, pens and books for our kids. What a mess our schools have become."

"This is for all the sports fans. What sport has good and bad guys? What sport has predetermined winners? What sport has promoters that show favoritism and crooked officials? No, it's not professional wrestling, it's NASCAR racing."

"The Mail Caller who accused Republicans of being ignorant is truly the ignorant one. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett never has, never will and never intends to vote for a pay raise for himself. Check your facts Mail Caller before you throw rocks at the Republicans."

"I'd like to know who the vender was at the C&O Canal Days that had the five and a half or six foot tall birdhouses that you could put your CD's in. I would love to have one and I can't find you anywhere at these other craft shows. I'd like to know how I can get in touch with you to buy one.

"When you're the world champs like the New York Yankees are, you don't have to be jealous of anybody. And oh yeah, by the way, they're gonna win it again."

"Help! I see the Maryland dictators are at it again!"

"Pappy and nanny would like to wish Gloria, our granddaughter, a happy birthday."

"This is a question for Social Services. When are you going to do something about this person who has had her two children taken away from her for neglect and abuse and now has a 9 month old baby? You have had hundreds of calls about her in the last nine months and all legitimate but yet nothing is being done. Why? This person's house is a mess and smells the minute you walk into it and now she has underaged kids moving in with her and yet no one does anything to change these results. She has not changed her cat litter from day one and there are cockroaches everywhere, even crawling out of the baby's bottles sitting on the kitchen sink. What's the problem here? Is this how you run this office? Who's responsible when someone gets hurt, very sick or dies in these conditions? Is it Social Services, this person or the taxpayers? We all probably know, don't we? Thanks for doing nothing once again."

"Please, let's all try to stop this hatred with so many murders and rapes daily. Why not count to 10 or 20 when your tempers rise? Wouldn't this be a much better world to love your neighbor? Please dear friends, let's get serious. Where will it all end if we don't change soon? Can't you treat other people the way that you want to be treated? Please callers, it's all up to you. This is very serious."

"My name is James and I was wondering if you would do me a very big favor? It would be greatly appreciated. I was wondering if you could mention to my fiancee Susan, that I love her very much. Please don't give up. We can work out our problems. Thank you Mail Call for all your help."
