United Way pledges hit 8 percent of goal

The United Way's 1997 fund drive in Washington County has received pledges amounting to 8 percent of its $1.85 million goal, agency officials said Monday.

The United Way, with 25 member agencies, has received pledges of $237,756, according to reports released this week.

Campaign notes:

* The City of Hagerstown purchasing department won the challenge to be the first department to complete its campaign.

* Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust employee campaign also is complete, with a 10 percent increase in giving and 27 new contributors.

* The residential campaign is underway with letters going out to more than 6,000 households.
