Mail call

September 18, 1997

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call weekdays at 301-791-6236.

Readers are welcome to leave their recorded message on any topic they choose, but some calls are screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I would like to give thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Jamison, an 8th grade teacher at Boonsboro Middle School. She is the perfect example of how to take charge and keep control of a classroom. In her class disruptive students can't destroy the right of the others to learn and that's a major problem today in the classroom - no control. So Mrs. Jamison, you are special and we appreciate you very, very much."

"The Washington County Commissioners are apparently floating and swimming in our money. They have taxed us too much through both the piggyback and property taxes. In addition, they have raised our sewer bills well beyond a reasonable limit and now they are so flushed with money that they can pay an economics development director $72,000 a year. What do you think of that Mail Callers?"

"Baseball like all sports is no longer a sport. It's big business so let the owners finance as such. I see the Suns drew over 115,000 in 1997 and I, along with many others would like to know how the owner makes out financially? Who would the new stadium benefit most? One person. It's much easier to spend someone else's money instead of your own."

"I would just like to know, I see in the paper where the city claims that the benches for the Public Square run from $1,000 to $1,500 each. Why don't they go to Lowe's and buy what they need for $25, $30 or $40?"

"This is for the person that parks their, I guess it's silver, Cavalier across from my house on Mulberry Street. Please take your car and park it some place else. I'm getting tired of seeing it. By the way, with Pennsylvania tags, it shouldn't be parked for three days straight, moving it one space and then back one. So take it, move it, junk it cause that's all it is anyway - junk."

"Happy birthday to the guys lost in the 50's and Sherry. Love, Jenny."

"I'm calling to find out if there are any readers out there who are divorced women, single parents again, who are having problems with the ex-husband and his new wife? My problems have definitely gotten worse since he remarried. The new wife is trying to snooze in and get her nose into everyone's business including mine. She now writes out my child support checks and sends them to me. That is not her job. It's rude, it's inconsiderate, it lacks in etiquette and I would never do that to another woman ever. I didn't divorce her and she's not part of my family and she's not part of my life yet she's allowed to write out my child support checks and send them to me as though it was her duty to do that. So if there's any other females out there who are facing these kinds of problems with the new wife trying to leave her mark in your life in some way, shape or form, I'd like to hear from you. Call into Mail Call and I will read it."

"We went to the Smithsburg Little Sluggers baseball awards ceremony at the high school and I just want to say what a joke it was. Parents just dropped off their rude, inconsiderate, obnoxious brats and went on their merry ways. Even the parents that were there had no control over their so-called children. They were loud and yelling throughout the entire thing. They were up and down in their seats and just plain rude. I was just about knocked down by one running to get cookies, butting in front of everyone and grabbing what he could. I can honestly say that I can understand why this league stopped having sit down buffet dinners at nice places. I can't believe that parents allow their children to act in this manner. My child sat throughout the entire event quietly and without much comment. He wasn't yelling, he wasn't up and down in his seat and he acted as a child should. I'm proud to say that my child knows how to act when at a public event and does so. I have three children and if one of mine acted the way these did last night, I'd be ashamed to show my face in public. Good job CL, I'm proud of you."

"Does anyone know what the pink flamingo stencils are for that I've seen around the county this summer? Thank you."

"Yes. I'd just like to leave a message for my daughter on Sept. 19. Happy birthday brat, love you. Me."

"I'm trying to find out exactly what a disease called Lupus is. If anyone knows or can help me please call in and let me know."

"Anyone looking to have acrylic nails put on really needs to go see Adam out at College Plaza. He's the best in town at doing his job. New low prices and a great guy. Go on out and find out for yourself. You'll be glad you did."
