Grant will go to improve apartments for elderly

September 13, 1997

The Washington County Housing Authority has received an $87,747 grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development for repair work on the county's apartments for the elderly.

Housing Authority Executive Director Richard Willson said 90 percent of the money will go to improving Blue Mountain Estates in Smithsburg and Parkview Knoll in Williamsport, including replacing stoves that residents said were "uneven and erratic."

"Our residents are going to be tickled pink," he said.

Congressman Roscoe G. Bartlett said in a news release that the grant was "an effective use of federal money to help those who cannot help themselves."

Willson said that the awarding of the grant reflects the reasonableness of the request and the housing authority's good track record in maintaining properties.
