'Gods and Generals' nearing financial goal

September 12, 1997

Only $100,000 in pledges are still needed to guarantee a $500,000 loan to cover preproduction costs for the Civil War film "Gods and Generals," a local business leader said Thursday.

So far $150,000 has been pledged, which will be matched by the Washington County Commissioners, said Michael Callas, who is leading the effort to obtain pledges.

The county will match up to $250,000 of the pledges.

The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau voted Thursday morning to pledge $25,000 toward the guarantee.

The City of Hagerstown and Phoenix Color Corp. have each pledged $50,000.

Farmers & Merchants Bank and Trust will provide the $500,000 line of credit, but the loan must be guaranteed in case the movie isn't made.

The loan will cover preproduction costs for the movie, which is expected to be filmed in Washington County.
