Maugansville woman dies in crash

September 11, 1997

A Maugansville woman was killed in a traffic accident near Washington County Hospital Wednesday, officials said.

Mary Catherine Martin, 84, of 13841 Village Mill Drive, was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier on Mill Street at about 10:30 a.m. when she drove through the intersection at Baltimore Street and collided with a Chevrolet van, according to the Hagerstown City Police.

She died about two hours later, police said.

Martin's son, Derald Lee Martin, 51, a passenger in the vehicle, was in fair condition Wednesday night at Washington County Hospital.

The driver of the van, Richard Lee Smith, 62, of Frederick, Md., was not injured, police said.

Before his death several years ago, Martin's husband, Clarence, owned the West End Market on West Washington Street in Hagerstown for about 40 years, said a longtime friend of the family. Roy Grove, of Huyetts Crossroads, said Mary Martin was a great woman.
