Sharpsburg Heritage Festival



Events are in Sharpsburg. There will be free shuttle buses between Sharpsburg and the battlefield Saturday and Sunday every half hour from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. One mile of Main Street and parts of North and South Mechanic streets will be closed to traffic with new traffic patterns posted.

Friday, Sept. 12

All day - re-enactors and sutlers establish camps around town; visitors are welcome to tour the camps

4 p.m. - walking tour of Sharpsburg, starts at information booth in Town Square

5 to 8 p.m. - artisans and craft vendors set up around town

7:30 p.m. - Appalachian Songs by Jim Brown and the choir, St. Paul's Episcopal Church

9 p.m. - barn dance on Antietam National Battlefield. For tickets, $10, call 301-432-4065

Saturday, Sept. 13

10 a.m. - 2nd Maryland Fifes and Drums, Town Square

lecture: "Civil War Bugle Calls" by George Rabbi, Sharpsburg Trinity Lutheran Church

10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - walking tour of Sharpsburg, starts at information booth in Town Square

10:30 a.m. - lecture: "A Taste of the 1860s" by Carol Anderson, Town Hall

11 a.m. - Amoskeag Players Minstrel Show, Town Square

Lecture: "Mercy Amidst the Mischief and Misery: The True Story of Civil War Medicine" by Burt Kummerow, Sharpsburg Trinity Lutheran Church

noon - March for Remembrance, Main Street

noon to 5 p.m. - Antietam Gallery on Md. 34 between the battlefield and Shepherdstown, W.Va., hosts author Wilmer Mumma. Civil War art by Mort Kunstler, Don Troiani and Dale Gallon; refreshments will be served. For information, call 301-432-5868.

1 to 5 p.m. - jousting tournament, Sharpsburg Elementary School

1 p.m. - Wildcat Regiment Band, Town Square

Show: Captain Leghorn's Showboat, family events tent

2 p.m. - festival auction, Town Square

concert: Robert Ewart, Scottish bagpiper, family events tent

135th anniversary service, St. Paul's Episcopal Church

"Women of the Battlefield" and quilt display, Christ Reformed Church

3:30 p.m. - Sally Mummery as Mary Todd Lincoln

4 p.m. - Rohrersville Band, Town Square

5 p.m. - turkey dinner, serving until 7:30 p.m., St. Paul's Episcopal Church

7:30 p.m. - alley walk through Sharpsburg: A step back in time (led by 2nd Maryland Fifes and Drums), Town Square

Sunday, Sept. 14

9 a.m. - old-fashioned hymn sing, St. Paul's Episcopal Church

10 a.m. - Ecumenical Church Service, Christ Reformed Church

concert: Amoskeag Players, Town Square

10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - walking tour of Sharpsburg, starts at information booth in Town Square

11 a.m. - Robert Ewart, Scottish bagpiper, Town Square

noon - lecture: "Children's Clothing of the Civil War," by Juanita Laisch, Town Hall

3 p.m. - U.S. Marine Corp Band marches into town for a "Grand Patriotic Concert" in Town Square. The band will be introduced by U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, R-Md.
