Thurmont updating master plan

September 03, 1997

FREDERICK, Md. - The Town of Thurmont is in the process of updating its master plan, which shows how the town should grow over the next 20-30 years. The plan was last updated in 1988. An open house and planning commission public hearing are scheduled to be held in September and October, to answer questions and receive public comments on the draft plan.

The open house will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 in the Thurmont Town Office, 10 Frederick Rd. Land use plan and zoning maps will be on display and residents will have an opportunity to ask questions of staff. Formal comments will be taken at the planning commission's public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 in the Thurmont Town Office. The planning commission will make a recommendation on the draft plan, which will then be forwarded to the town board. A second public hearing will be held by the town board later this year.

The draft plan consists of several elements including environmental features, transportation, community facilities and land use. There are goals and policies for each of these elements that would provide guidance for the town officials as they make decisions regarding the rate, type and location of new development. A proposed zoning map is also part of the draft plan. The proposed zoning map includes some rezonings either requested by individual property owners or proposed by county staff. This comprehensive rezoning process will allow the land use plan to be consistent with the zoning. Copies of the draft plan are available at the Thurmont Town Office, Thurmont Library, and at the Frederick County Planning Department in Winchester Hall. They also will be available at the open house.
