Draft EIS opened to public

September 02, 1997

FORT RITCHIE - The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Base Realignment and Closure Disposal and Reuse of Fort Ritchie in Washington County is now available for public inspection at five local libraries.

The document is available for review at the Alexander Hamilton Library in Waynesboro, Pa.; the Blue Ridge Summit Library in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; the Adams County Library in Gettysburg, Pa.; the Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown; and the C. Burr Artz Central Library in Frederick, Md.

Based on public law in response to the recommendations of the 1995 Department of Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission, Fort Ritchie will be closed by Oct. 1, 1998, with the exception of a 19.3-acre National Guard enclave.

The Army's Draft EIS addresses the environmental, cultural and socioeconomic impacts associated with the closure of Fort Ritchie, as well as the impacts of reasonable, foreseeable reuse activities at the site or upon the surrounding area.
