Trucker travels wrong way on I-270

FREDERICK, Md. - A North Carolina trucker was attempting to get on southbound Interstate 270 from Md. 80 Monday morning and got on the wrong ramp, according to Maryland State Police.

It didn't take Thomas Lee Noble, 45, long to realize his mistake as his southbound rig began to encounter northbound traffic, police said.

He pulled over immediately without incident, police said.

Noble told troopers he had just gotten his commercial driver's license and it was his first day on the job.

Other truckers stopped and helped him back his truck down the ramp as troopers stopped traffic, police said.

W.Va. man charged with uttering

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg man was jailed over the weekend after state police charged him with cashing bogus checks worth more than $2,000.

West Virginia State Police said Charles L. Carey was charged with five counts of uttering for allegedly cashing the five checks between July 5 and July 15 at Huntington Banks on Foxcroft Avenue. The checks ranged from $180 to $650 and were drawn on a closed account at Home Federal Savings and Loan in Hagerstown.

The police report said the account, belonging to a Hagerstown man, had been closed in February. Carey was jailed in lieu of $12,500 bond.

Hagerstown fire quickly quenched

The Hagerstown Fire Department quickly put out a fire at a nearly empty apartment building Monday afternoon, officials said.

The fire, which authorities believe was intentionally set, started on the back porch behind 654 N. Prospect St. at about 2:10 p.m., Battalion Chief Kingsley Poole said. He said the fire started to creep up the side of the building but was stopped before it could advance.

The building contains about six apartments, but only one is occupied, Poole said. He said the fire started outside one of the abandoned apartments.

The owner of the building is Ed Snook, Poole said. The city fire marshal's office is investigating the fire.

Teen charged with grand larceny

INWOOD, W.Va. - West Virginia State Police arrested an 18-year-old over the weekend for allegedly stealing an all-terrain vehicle.

Michael W. Brennan, no fixed address, was charged with grand larceny for allegedly stealing the ATV on Aug. 16 from Daniel Hendricks of Inwood. The ATV was valued at $4,700.

Brennan's bond was set at $5,000, according to records at the state magistrate's office.

Pa. man injured in motorcycle wreck

A Rouzerville, Pa., man was injured early Sunday when his motorcycle crashed on Barkdoll Road north of Md. 64, Maryland State Police said.

Nick Dean Van Dyke, 23, of 13673 Harbaugh Church Road, was taken to Washington County Hospital shortly after the 4 a.m. accident.

Van Dyke wasn't wearing a helmet, police said, and sustained a head injury which left him unconscious.

His condition Monday night was fair, hospital officials said.

Boy injured when falling on pitchfork

A 13-year-old boy who reportedly fell on a pitchfork Sunday was transported to Washington County Hospital.

Thomas Grams, of 21415 Ridenour Road, was in fair condition Monday night, hospital officials said.

Garbage, debris dumped in pool

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -Someone broke into the pool snack bar at the Chambersburg Country Club over the weekend, causing major damage.

Chairs, cans of garbage and towels were dumped into the pool, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

In addition, someone defecated in the pool, police said.
