The Maryland Theatre has discontinued its 800 toll-free number because too many local people were using it to call the theater, board member Jack Staley said Monday.
The local calls to 1-800-34SHOWS were being billed at the same rate as long-distance calls, Staley said.
Staley said the board considered that an unnecessary expense.
An official with Sprint's 1-800 service said Monday that local calls could be blocked for a one-time $100 fee. Staley said he would check out that possibility and discuss it with other board members and President Patricia Wolford, who was not available Monday.
Staley said he didn't know how much the local calls were costing and said Wolford would have that information.
The theater's box office number is 301-790-2000. The office number is 301-790-3500.
