Volunteers needed

August 14, 1997

Organizers of the 135th Anniversary Re-enactment of the Battle of Antietam want you.

Volunteers - about 400 - are needed before and during the event. More than 100 people have signed up, and others have expressed interest, but people need to register so assignments can be made, said Georgene Charles, chairwoman of the volunteer committee. A quick phone call to Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites Inc. at 301-665-1400 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. will do it. After hours, leave a voice mail message with your name, phone number and address.

From Wednesday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 14, volunteers will register participants - who may be arriving through the night - direct parking, sell refreshments, remove trash and provide information. On Friday, Sept. 12, volunteers will guide groups of school children through a couple of dozen stops, which will include demonstrations of everyday life for children of the period, according to Jeff Driscoll of APCWS.
