August 14, 1997

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A five-car accident temporarily shut down the north and southbound lanes of Interstate 81 Wednesday morning near Wayne Avenue in Guilford Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

A driver and passenger from Middletown, Pa. received minor injuries when their car, heading northbound, was struck almost head-on by another which skidded across the median from the southbound lane, police said.

The 11:24 a.m. accident occurred when a van, driven by Dennis Ritchey, 52, of Robersdale, Pa., was forced to slow down behind a slow-moving vehicle in the right lane, driven by Casimir Rzomp, 82, of Greencastle, Pa., a witness told police.

As Ritchey attempted to slow down, the vehicle skidded on the wet pavement and struck a vehicle in the left lane driven by Vivien Lee, 23, of Hershey, Pa., police said.

They were taken to Chambersburg Hospital where they were treated and released.
