RCI inmates protest over showers

August 08, 1997

About 20 inmates at the Roxbury Correctional Institution staged a brief protest over shower restrictions Wednesday evening, refusing to return to their cells from the recreation hall.

The 8:50 p.m. incident ended peacefully when the RCI tactical team was dispatched to the segregation housing unit in case the inmates continued their protest.

According to RCI spokesman Ron Bucher, the inmates returned to their cells without any need for force.

"No inmates were charged in the incident," Bucher said. No one was injured.

Bucher said the inmates were upset with water restrictions on showers, put into effect while repairs were being made on water lines to the prison.

Those repairs have now been completed, Bucher said.
