Maxine Shearer, a City of Hagerstown employee for 10 years, received a Quality Public Service Award on Tuesday during a work session of the mayor and City Council.
Shearer was honored for being a "nonstop performer" with a "constructive approach and positive manner," said City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman.
For about the last two years, Shearer has been an administrative secretary for Hagerstown City Police. She was nominated for the award by Capt. Robert Hart and Lt. Richard Mumma, who retired earlier this year.
Police Chief Dale Jones said Shearer goes beyond her job description, helping write grant applications and training police officers on computers.
Jones called her an "exemplary employee."
Shearer started working for the city as a secretary for the police department's Criminal Investigation Division and then was City Finance Director Al Martin's secretary for five years.
