Washington County plans to team up with Frederick County and possibly Montgomery County in applying for a Rural Legacy grant from the state of Maryland, County Planning Director Robert Arch said Tuesday.
Arch said about $70 million in grant funds are available for the new program, but about $1 billion in proposals are expected from across the state. Arch said teaming up with other counties should increase the chances that Washington County will receive funding.
The Rural Legacy program will purchase easements to prevent development on lands with cultural, agricultural or historical significance.
The county plans to focus its efforts on the area south of Boonsboro, Arch said.
