Hagerstown man faces sex charge

FREDERICK, Md. - A Hagerstown man was charged Wednesday with touching an 8-year-old girl, the Frederick Police Department said.

Richard Ernest Roberts, 49, of Washington Street, was charged with second- and third-degree sex offense. He was being held in the Frederick County Adult Detention Center Thursday night on $150,000 bond.

The arrest concludes a six-week investigation that began when the girl was referred to Frederick investigators by the Department of Social Services, police said. Authorities launched the investigation June 18.

The girl told investigators that she was touched inappropriately, police said.

Woman uninjured as vehicle wrecks

A Greencastle, Pa., woman was uninjured Wednesday when her car careened off Stevenson Road near Smithsburg and ran into a barn, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.


Belinda Lee Embly, 28, of 12036 Gearhart Road, was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision, deputies said.

The 7:51 p.m. accident occurred when Embly's 1992 Dodge Shadow failed to make a curve in the 22800 block of Stevenson Road and hit the barn, deputies said.

In other police action,

* Hagerstown City Police were called to 316 S. Potomac St. Wednesday where thieves entered through an unlocked door and stole a video game system and games valued at $465.

* Tires on several vehicles on North Haven Street off U.S. 11 were slashed Wednesday, according to Maryland State Police.

* Damage to the Maryland State Police radio tower on Sideling Hill Mountain was discovered over the weekend and repaired as of Wednesday.

Some aluminum elements had been broken off, police said.
