Fire damages attic in house

A small fire broke out in the attic of a house on Redwood Drive outside Hagerstown Wednesday when a portable light fell into the insulation, fire officials said.

The home, at 17 Redwood Drive, is owned by Connie Guerrero, officials said. Guerrero's son and nephew were moving items into the unfurnished attic when they decided to take a break just before 6 p.m.

Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. Capt. Vinson Dieterich said the fire burned the insulation and damaged the structure. He estimated damage at a couple hundred dollars.

"They pretty well had it out with a garden hose when we got there. We finished it off," he said.
