July 31, 1997

Local school children and their parents can get a jump on the upcoming school year by attending the City of Hagerstown's Back to School Expo on Thursday, Aug. 7.

"It's fun for the children and educational at the same time," said Downtown Coordinator Karen Giffin.

Children will have the opportunity to walk on a school bus for the first time, Giffin said.

This is the ninth year for the expo, to be held in the North Potomac Street parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The expo is sponsored by the city, the Downtown Assessment District and WQCM/WHAG radio station.

Children 12 years old or younger get one slice of pizza and one beverage for free, according to Giffin.

Exhibitors at the expo will include Washington County Hospital Bike Safety, Washington County Council of PTAs, Hagerstown Fire Department, Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown YMCA, Washington County Health Department, Hagerstown Police Department and the Parent/Child Center.

Expected at the expo are Jay Jay from the Hagerstown Suns, McGruff the Crime Dog, Time Out Teddy from the Parent/Child Center and Vince and Larry Crash Dummies, Giffin said.
