Staff and wire reports

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Two escapees from the Eastern Regional Detention Center remained at large late Wednesday night, according to Martinsburg City Police.

Miguel Quinones, 19, of Framingham, Mass., overpowered guard Cheryl Lutz early Tuesday morning, stealing the keys to the institution and the keys to her car, officials said.

The convicted murderer was joined by Adam Rozas, 17, of Charles Town, who had recently been convicted in an auto theft case. Police said Rozas may have joined in the escape because he knew how to drive a stick shift automobile.

Lutz, who was locked in Quinones' cell for about an hour, was not seriously injured, officials said.

Quinones had been convicted of killing a man in Fayette County, W.Va. two years ago. He was being housed at the detention center while he was appealing the case.

In addition to the motor vehicle theft conviction in Jefferson County, Rozas had been involved last year in a stolen car chase in Washington County with Maryland state police.
